(192 pages) One of the most feared and useful weapons in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition is dissected and discussed in this fully-illustrated guide to both perfecting and defending against the Low Kick. Many competitors view this technique as a single tool in their arsenal, limiting themselves when they could be taking this low-line method of attack and modifying it to fit far more kicking situations than those commonly used. This volume demonstrates how to expand the Low-Kicking Arsenal, showing how a simple alteration in leg targeting can strongly challenge an opponent's defense, and how to hone low-line kicking power and speed so that rapid-fire low-line kicking becomes a powerful advantage. These techniques are prime for MMA competitions and anyone who wants to improve both their self-defense and competition skills with the best empirical information available.

(176 pages) The 10th in our continuing series and the subject this time is less "how to" and more "what not to do." Less a "Hey, do this" guide and more a "why-or why not-do this." In short The Essentials is a strategy guide that introduces fight metrics to the sport of MMA to allow us to make educated choices in offensive and defensive tools unclouded by assumption or style. We use a careful analysis of 640 elite level MMA matches (both cage and ring) to fuel the material within. Once we get the expository fight metrics under out belts, it's time to move on to the inescapable "how to" portion of the book where we present offense/defense in a strictly analyzed Hierarchy of Utility so that you know each and every technique introduced has proven itself in top-level competition and by what margin. It is just this sort of quantifiable approach that can lead to great qualitative strides.
(192 pages/800 photos) First, for those wondering, O/D is "offensive/defensive" drilling. This manual is devised to be a mix & match drill reference for MMA fighters blending all aspects of the game in stair-stepped/skill-tiered sparring chains. All drill work is based on the "outside-in principle" Striking to Shooting to Clinch to Dirty-Boxing to Ground and Pound to Submission work. The opening portion of the manual explains the science behind integrating the drills as complete sets and then establishes the method-from Permutations that take the manual to 75+ more drills. These drills skip the cross-training in martial arts/sports and strives to place the emphasis on the "Mix" in Mixed Martial Arts from the word go.
(176 pages)Ground and Pound is one of the most devastating tactics in elite MMA competition and this manual is your go-to drill resource. It opens with a short history of the GnP strategy followed by a close look at the fight metrics that allow us to choose when to use this strategy over submissions (that may be more often than you think). We cannot give short shrift to the first word in the Ground and Pound strategy--Ground, so, we provide the engineering approach to keeping your opponent grounded and then offer an exhaustive drill set that builds ground fluidity/mobility that will benefit both the ground and pounder and the submission specialist. We introduce the 32 observable ground positions found in MMA and shoot them through the Mobility Clock Drill (36 Drills) to hone your grounding to a razor's edge. We then hit the 6 most successful break-downs in MMA to flatten/turn the turtled opponent, after that we hit the 94-Piece Pounding Arsenal that details all the successful strikes that can be and have been feasibly and effectively delivered from each position. Then, finally, we end with a 16-Step Drill Set to integrate the Grounding Drills with the Pounding Drills. We always strive for exhaustive detail and I can assure that with this manual we have come as close as one can manage to a one-stop Ground and Pound Master Manual.
(240 pages & 1000+ photos) This book is the newest volume in our ongoing series. It is devised as a Coach's/Competitor's reference book to select specific strike combination tools and applications so that you can tailor curriculum specifically to your needs. Briefly, this volume covers...The Primacy of Punches in Bunches, The Neuroscience behind the Effectiveness of Combinations, The Power of Constructing in Three's, The fight metrics behind the Power of Three's, The Biomechanics of Striking Power, Streamlined integrated Footwork, The Wisdom of "Miss" Training, The Rise of the MMA Jab. We then offer high-percentage Striking Combination Menus (180 of them to be exact) culled from 500 analyzed top-level MMA matches and break them into Number of Strikes per Combination and/or Featured Tool (Punches, Elbows, Knees, and Kicks) so that you can easily zero-in on your specific drill needs. We then offer a section on High-Percentage combinations to Mask Shooting and then we move into how to add spice to striking training by Chunking Combinations, Firing all combinations through the Six Drills & the Six Attitudes, and we conclude with a section on how to "Game the Gear" to make even solo strike training competitive.
(240 pages) This book is number 14 (!) in our continuing series. Right up front, yes, you see that word "Boxer" on the cover and , yes, the books specific focus is conditioning for boxing but also the book is intended for conditioning all strikers. (To be frank, you can use this book for conditioning alone simply by ignoring the striking equipment sections.) Here's a little on what you'll find between the covers. In our typical long-winded digressive exposition of the scientific basis of our approach you'll find the following mini-essays: "Chance Favors the Prepared Mind," "10,000 Hours" (concerns the latest research regarding the journey from novice to master), stacking the odds in favor of even the novice with "Marginal Revolutions," "GPP vs. SPP" which weighs the two-dominant approaches to conditioning and how they stack when applied to fight training, "The Attributes Demand" chart, "More is Better?" to help you gain optimum results in less time than you think, "Tradition vs. Innovation" assesses old-school approaches with the new school along with a little myth-busting. All this and more + "Champion's Tale" sidebars that spotlight unusual training methods used by great champs of the past and present. Next, we move into "Floorwork" (boxing parlance for calisthenics) which we break into 6 Broad Categories: Pushing, Pulling, Legs, Core (and not a sit-up or crunch to be found in the bunch), True Floorwork, and Medicine Ball & Sledgehammer Work. 83 fighter specific calisthenics in all. Next, we run the Great 8 Plyometrics Drills to build some major explosiveness in the lower body. Then the 7 Old School Rules of Weight Training followed by 18 Bar Work exercises, 7 Dumbbell Exercises, and 4 Kettlebell Exercises that will comprise the iron portion of your training. We then show you how to assemble the workouts with 31 separate GPP Workouts for 3 levels (Rookies, Intermediate, and Advanced athletes). We then move into the striking equipment section (SPP) and introduce The Footwork Tango, a 14-Part Drill to hone all aspects of your ring footwork. Next, a 70 Item Combination Checklist for Plugging punch-combinations into different SPP Drills. Next, we compare and contrast Old School Roadwork (LSD) and New School Roadwork (Sprints) and then provide approaches for both with a dozen separate New School Sprint Drills to get more done in less time. We then move into an abbreviated Rope-Skipping section--Wanna know why it's so short? Read the book for the math. Next, we cover the 5 Rules of Heavy Bag Work and provide 17 separate drills to beat the mindless pounding doldrums. Then we apply an even dozen drills for Shadow/Mirror work. Then 14 Double-End Bad drills. 10 Rope-Weaving Drills. Rope-Weaving is a woefully under-utilized old school method that builds exceptional upper-body movement. Next, the 5 Commandments of Focus Pads and 13 alternate approaches to this exceptional piece of gear. The relative merits and demerits of Sparring along with 20 Sparring Drills to always keep your brain (and jab) popping. And we close with resources to add to these drills as well as how to fold your Flow Drills/Down & Out Drills into your strike training.
(168 pages) This book is number 15 (!) in our continuing series. An encyclopedia of effective defenses and counters. The science of boxing is in large part the art of counterpunching--making your opponent miss with his punch and making him pay. This manual provides all the tools you need to build a powerful defensive base for boxing--every defense for every punch from every angle. And then you will learn to build on that defensive base and educate natural punching triggers. That is, logical counterpunching sequences that take you from the beginner's realm of being a mere puncher into the upper echelons of crafty counterboxing. More than 500 images in action sequence illustrate defenses, first response counters and follow-up combinations to every attack.
You can purchase all 15 volumes of the book series for the discounted price of $200 ($220 with international shipping).
We've been running the Legends Newsletter for over 8 years now and you can view the last 9 months archives via this link. For those of you who think there is occasionally something of interest to be found here and wondered what you may have missed, Paladin has packaged up more than 160 of the best of these little missives, allowed me to update them and then packaged them into a handy 260 page volume. The material runs the gamut of technique instruction, pseudo-profound scientific musings as they pertain to combat, historical pieces, and a couple of rants regarding real-world crime.
